Spiritual Utility
We build nothing unless it relieves something real, for a person we can name.
Nothing you use here needs your pain in order to keep being paid.
Eleven for each pillar, and three held apart. Every one of them is two short lines: what it asks of us, and what that gives back to you.
What are you becoming?
We build nothing unless it relieves something real, for a person we can name.
Nothing you use here needs your pain in order to keep being paid.
We build slowly, and we say out loud what we are waiting for.
What reaches you arrives because it was ready, not because a deadline came.
We give ordinary work the same attention as important work.
The care in what you receive never depends on who was watching.
Nothing moves us unless we agreed to be moved.
You are never moved by something built to move you without your agreement.
We test what is true against what merely sounds true, starting with ourselves.
What reaches you has already survived our own doubt.
We start from enough, rather than earning our way toward it.
You are never addressed as someone who is missing something.
We check our own seeing before we trust it.
You are never observed in a way we could not describe to you.
What we do can change. Why we do it cannot.
The thing you trusted us for will still be the thing we are doing in twenty years.
Anyone we affect can ask us why, and must receive a real answer.
You are owed the truth, and you owe us no account of yourself in return.
We decide how we will treat you when things break, while we are still calm.
The plan for your worst day exists before that day arrives.
We hold one thing completely, until it is finished.
You receive finished work, not many half-built pieces.
How does understanding cross from one person to another?
We say something true, in the fewest words that let you act on it.
Confusion is always ours to fix, and never a test you failed.
We keep our own voice under pressure, and we protect yours.
You sound more like yourself after reading us, never more like us.
A story is finished on our clock, and received on yours.
We will never wait for a weak moment to make something land harder.
We keep the mirror clean, and let it show what it shows.
Whatever you recognise in it stays yours to interpret, slowly or never.
Your hours are held in trust, and never traded.
We answer for what we did with your time, and you owe us nothing back.
We stay close enough to be corrected, and no closer.
We may know you only as much as we have let you know us.
We carry old true things, rather than minting new ones.
Nothing is installed in you. Something already there is uncovered.
Anyone can tell us we are wrong, and watch the work change.
If you cannot argue with it, it was never truth-telling.
We build shape, so understanding can cross between minds.
You leave with movement, not facts you could have found anywhere.
We supply the ground a story stands on.
Nothing else gets to decide what our words come to mean to you.
How something feels is a promise about what it is.
Nothing we make will ever feel larger than it actually is.
What must an ordinary day hold, so the first two remain possible?
We choose the lightest tool an idea needs.
Sometimes the careful answer is that we build nothing at all.
Everything we build can be asked a question, and must answer.
Nothing we make is allowed to know you better than you can know it.
The more invisible a system becomes, the louder its duty to answer.
You can always ask what it did to you, and by what rule.
We remove the machinery standing between a person and their own life.
We take the pinch out of the shoe, without ever flattening the hill.
We refuse pull, not speed.
No part of Empathy earns more from you staying longer, unless you also got more.
We open doors instead of locking them.
If you walk through and are hurt we help, and never say you were warned.
We build for the mind in front of us, not an average one.
The thing behaves the way you already expected it to.
Our promises reach everyone, or they reach no one.
If you cannot use something, the door was built wrong, and the door is ours.
We build so someone else could pick this up and carry it on.
Empathy will end one day, and what it made should outlive it for you.
You move through Empathy as one life, and remain many people.
We never hold a fuller picture of you than we will hand back.
A machine empties your time without deciding what fills it.
The hours we save are returned to you, unclaimed.
Not a fourth pillar. The thirty-three describe how Empathy behaves when it is well. These three are what remain when it is not.
We ask what a decision cost us, because if it cost nothing then nothing changed.
You can hold us to the record of what we gave up, not to what we said.
We ask whether the work still disturbs anyone.
A story that has stopped unsettling you has stopped reaching you.
We ask whether a thing should exist, before asking whether we can build it.
What you meet is only what survived being refused.
Two lines each, and no more
Every principle has a full text behind it: how it is applied, how it can be misused, and what we do when it is. That belongs to how Empathy governs itself and it lives in our Archive. What you are owed is what a principle does to you and by what rule, and that is what is written here.
